Fujifilm XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens
Until the XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 release, Fuji’s marketing was directed primarily towards the portrait, wedding, landscape, and travel photographers. This lens, however, is aimed squarely at the sports and wildlife sector of the market. The twin linear motor autofocus system makes the lens quick to focus on fast-moving subjects. And the lens’s 35mm equivalent of 152mm to 609mm makes it ideally suited to photographing distant subjects.
The lens offers excellent optical image stabilization. The OIS, combined with the lens’s relatively lightweight (compared to Nikon and Canon 500mm prime glass), makes it easy to handhold and shoot in low-light conditions.
The XF 100-400mm lens is compatible with all of the X-series interchangeable lens cameras. However, the lens is particularly well suited for use with Fujifilm’s X-T2 camera. The X-T2’s fast continuous shooting and ability to create a user-defined AF-C custom preset complement the lens beautifully.
This ultra-telephoto lens offers photographers the flexibility to shoot various types of shots and the chance to truly get up close to subjects, with a wide 100-400mm zoom range. Its high-quality construction also means it’s able to capture movement. If you need a lens that can zoom in to a bird sitting high in the treetops, handle capturing the movement in a soccer game, and still allow you to snap a tight portrait if needed, this Fujifilm XF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens delivers.
A common problem when shooting with zoom in a telephoto lens is camera shake – the longer the focal length, the more obvious it becomes. Fujifilm has considered this and built into the lens a 5.0-stop image stabilization system to help ensure crisp shots that remain free from blur. This is the most powerful image stabilization system to feature in a super-telephoto zoom lens. Even at the maximum telephoto setting, the results are clear: steady, detailed images without a sign of camera shake.
This Fuji 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens has been built with optics that deliver top image quality – with 21 elements in 14 groups, including five ED lenses and a Super ED lens. This build is effective in minimizing aberrations and distortion while enhancing clarity, sharpness, and color. This Fujifilm lens also features a rounded 9-blade diaphragm and offers a maximum magnification of 0.19x so you can also capture telephoto macro images. From gorgeous close-ups of delicate flower petals that pop with color to vivid wildlife shots at full zoom, you will be pleased with the results.
The autofocusing mechanism in the Fuji 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens is powered by twin linear motors that ensure fast focusing, so you can capture fast-moving subjects like a horse trotting in the distance or a car as it moves towards you. Better yet, it’s also quiet, so you could even take this lens into a theatre production and relax knowing it won’t disturb others around you.
If you tend to do a lot of outdoor photography, relax knowing the Fuji 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens is built to handle unpredictable outdoor environments, with the weather- and dust-resistant seals at 12 points. It is also freeze-proof, able to withstand temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius. A fluorine coating is also applied to the front lens element to repel water and make it easier to clean. From remote Aussie bush landscapes to the snowy peaks of Japan, this lens won’t let you down.
For a telephoto lens with such a large zoom range, this Fuji 100-400mm lens is still relatively lightweight, so it won’t put add physical strain to your day of shooting. Weighing less than 1.4kg, the weight is distributed in a way that makes it feel lighter than it actually is.
This is an in-depth review of Fujifilm’s XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens. The lens was released in early 2016 and is Fuji’s longest focal length lens and the only super-telephoto zoom in its lens lineup at this time. At the moment, the lens holds a couple of records, being the heaviest at 1375g and the most expensive at $1899 among all Fujifilm X-mount lenses.
