The Leica L-mount 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens from Sigma is a short-telephoto prime with the impressive optical performance. It is well-suited for portraiture and selective everyday shooting and offers a fast f/2.8 aperture for controlling depth of field and working in less-than-ideal light. This lens includes an aspherical element and five special low-dispersion elements to control a variety of aberrations and achieve notable sharpness and clarity. The lens incorporates a manual aperture ring for enhanced tactility, and also featured is a stepping motor for quick and quiet AF performance. A rounded nine-blade diaphragm lets you achieve a pleasingly smooth bokeh, and the lens's all-metal body is weather-sealed to suit working in inclement conditions.
The Sigma 90mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is a "Premium Compact Prime" lens for mirrorless cameras. I series lenses are designed for "photographers who value the experience of taking a picture just as much as the quality of the results." As this sixth Sigma I series lens review hits the site, expected and ever more apparent is that these lenses (and reviews) have many similarities. Thankfully, these lens models are all superbly built and optically high-performing.
The lens also utilizes the camera's optical correction functionality, which is an advantage of mirrorless systems, SIGMA's optical designers were able to concentrate on correcting aberrations that can only be corrected by the optical design, thereby improving rendering performance and reducing the size and weight of the lens. With a minimum focusing distance of 50cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5, close-up macro-style photography is possible.
